My History With Bettas

When I first had a betta I was 7-8 years old. I had a blue purple male betta in one of those cups that they sold for bettas back in the 80′s and 90′s. Back then I really did not know much about bettas, neither did my mother. We fed him two pellets a day and changed his water twice a week, he lived for a long while for like a few months, which I thought was a great thing at the time. Then we had other fish in a 20 gallon fresh water aquarium though sadly my mother got tired of them and let them free at a nearby lake or something. I again knew this was sort of wrong but hey we really did not know any better back then and I was too young to really say anything.

Then many years later in 2012 I decided to get a new betta, I remembered how much I loved that first betta I had back when I was younger and I just decided I wanted to try again. I got my first girl betta from my near by Wal-Mart and I looked for all the information available online about bettas and from a 1 gallon bowl I got her a 5 gallon tank then a 10 gallon tank which I still own. Sadly though she died after 6 months. Then I decided to get two more Bettas back when I moved to Puerto Rico but they where already sick and old and I had left them with my grandmother and she really could not take proper care of them and so they also passed much to my dismay.

Now I have three bettas under my care Omega a Red VT in a 2.8 gallon tank with a heater, a crocodile skull for aquariums, and gravel plus three aquarium plants a Baby Betta Double Tail called Double Tail in a 3 gallon tank with a betta heater, aquarium plants, a light, some gravel and a aquarium house. I also have Half Moon Betta in a Hamster Kritter Keeper with a heater, gravel two plants and an ornament. I also have two more bettas under my mother care one of which I got from Walmart in May 2012 and I cured from Pop Eye and Swim Bladder Disease by changing his water for 14 days straight and using Aquarium Salt and making the temperature higher with a heater and a heating pad underneath it’s one gallon bowl with a bare bottom and no ornaments. He’s name is Neon and I also have a red Crown tail named Red Crown. I also had a Blue VT named Sapphire that I gave as a gift to my older sister.

This so far is my adventure and my history with betta keeping. I will hopefully be going into the Betta Rescue business but I will have to wait till I move back to Florida. I have never bred bettas nor do I plan to any time soon for I don’t have the money , the space nor the equipment for such a huge project. I however wish to save those bettas that I can help to have a fighting chance to live, thrive and have a new forever home.
